The number of people with HIV is still high in Europe and many cases are diagnosed late, highlighting the need for additional tests, said Wednesday two European health agencies.
About 159,000 cases of the virus were reported in Europe in 2017, according to a report released prior to World AIDS Day.
Most of the new cases were registered in Eastern Europe, with Russia and Ukraine accounting for 75% of them, according to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control located on the outskirts of Stockholm and the United States. European Office of Health based in Copenhagen.
More than 2 million people are affected by HIV in 53 countries in the European region.
Both health agencies reported that the number of new cases was lower than in recent years, but the delay in diagnosis remained a challenge.
The general trend suggests that Europe will not reach the UN goal of eliminating HIV / AIDS by 2030, one of the goals of sustainable development .
