Gas prices in Europe hit a record high since March 2018

Gas prices started to rise after the Russian company “Gazprom” decided to reserve only 4% of the additional transport capacity through Ukraine for the month of September.

According to the existing contract, the Russian company is to transport 40 billion cubic meters of gas per year through the Ukrainian gas transit system. It is also possible to use the additional capacities of this system in an emergency, but the price is much higher.

However, the company has already refused to increase gas transport despite strong demand in Europe. “The obligations of the contract with Ukraine are fully implemented,” said Yelena Burmistrova, director of “Gazpromexport” and vice-president of “Gaprom”, adding that the reservation of additional transport capacity is made on demand. of consumers last April. She pointed out that the gas transfer is currently proceeding according to existing plans.

In addition, “Gazprom” has to fill Russian storage facilities, due to the approach of winter.

At the same time, the experts do not exclude that the question is limited to commercial conditions to reserve additional transport capacities. The Russian company is not disclosing to what extent its contracts depend on the spot price, that is, when gas is purchased subject to immediate supply.

The head of the Ukrainian company “Naftogaz”, Yury Vitrenko, had previously announced that Russia simply feared Europe, while the head of the “Manager of the Ukrainian gas transport network”, Sergey Makogon, expressed his belief that the gas price increases due to the Russian company’s refusal to sell additional capacity, continuing that “Gazprom, according to him, hopes for the upcoming inauguration of“ North Stream-2 ”.

The “North Stream-2” gas pipeline, which will double the supply of Russian gas to the European Union via the Baltic Sea, was built almost to completion. Moscow believes that “attempts to undermine and challenge and provide certain conditions for their completion are doomed to failure.”

The organizer of the “Nord Stream 2 AG” project hopes to complete the construction of the Russian gas pipeline by the end of this month.
