Since the New York Times reported last month that Facebook was building a competitor for Clubhouse, many questions have been asked and remain unanswered.
Until it shows new screenshots of a Facebook audio product, which is still in development, what appears to be a live podcast experience is an extension of Facebook’s Messenger Rooms, rather than ‘a standalone application experience.
Facebook confirmed the images were examples of the company’s exploratory voice efforts, but cautioned that it was not a straightforward product at this time.
Features under development
He also clarified that the details of what the product might look like based on these images will be imprecise as features are under development and may differ completely from live products.
The images help explain how Facebook thinks about live audio and where this social experience might fit into the current Facebook app.

The images were also shared by mobile developer Alessandro Balozzi, who encountered live audio developments through Facebook and UI experiences in the code of the Facebook Android app.

Commenting on the photos, a company spokesperson said, “We’ve been connecting people through audio and video technologies for many years, and we’re always exploring new ways to improve that experience for people.
Additionally, the current beta of Messenger Rooms allows users to choose the type of room they want from competitor Zoom via Facebook first launched in May.
One option also allows a private audio room with friends and another private video room, while the last option called Live Audio allows the user to start an audio broadcast only to a room full of listeners.
Messenger Rooms supports up to 50 people, but is not designed to provide a general streaming experience.
The Facebook version currently has a Clubhouse-style interface, with speakers displayed at the top of the list of users and listeners listed below speakers. “Anyone on Facebook can join the broadcast without having to open messaging rooms,” says Palozzi.
