Cox was one of the oldest service managers on Facebook and was close to his president, Zuckerberg.
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announced the resignation of company chief Chris Cox and platform manager Chris Daniels.
Cox joined Facebook in 2005, a year after its founding, while Daniels took office a year ago.
Facebook has not announced clear reasons for their departure.
Cox, who is close to Zuckerberg, started as a software engineer for the company and helped launch several key applications such as News Feed.
Cox has also held several senior management positions in the company: he led the human resources department and also launched the Facebook Workplace platform.
Daniels started as the platform's leader five years after managing the Internet.org initiative, which helps to strengthen online communication around the world.
Daniels will succeed Will Cathcart, who currently runs the mobile phone application for Facebook.
Cox did not say who would succeed him.

The changes took place soon after Zuckerberg announced his intention to turn Facebook into a "privacy platform".
The social networking giant, with its two platforms, Watsab and Engström, has faced the worst disruption in its history this week.
Facebook attributed the crash to a server change.
