(CNN) – A partial Facebook break, affecting users around the world, lasted more than 10 hours. It is thought that this is the biggest disruption ever seen in social networks.

Facebook, the largest service provider in the world, has turned to its rival Twitter to explain that its group of popular applications has technical difficulties.

Some Facebook users and other platforms belonging to the technology giant, including Instagram and WatSAP, have reported problems accessing services and publishing content.

Instead of showing personal photos and status updates, many of them received an error message saying "Sorry, something went wrong."

Users went on Twitter to express their frustration. FacebookDown and InstagramDown have become popular on Twitter.

The disruption of service began on Wednesday afternoon, Eastern Time, and affected many people Thursday in different parts of the world, and spread to parts of Asia on Thursday.
