The International Football Federation (FIFA) announced Wednesday that it was investigating the transfer of Emiliano Sala from Nantes to Cardiff at the request of the French club.

The Argentinian died when his plane from Nantes fell to Cardiff in the English Channel shortly after joining the Premier League club. His body was later found in the wreckage, while pilot David Ebotsson was still missing.

Mimit Dalman of Cardiff City said the club would pay the transfer fee of 15 million pounds ($ 19.96 million) to Sala in Nantes "if the contract is required."

The two clubs began a dispute when the first payment of the transfer has expired, although Cardiff Neil Warnock said last week that Nantes had to agree to extend the repayment date.

"We can confirm that we received last night a contract request from Nantes against Cardiff City regarding the transfer of Emiliano Sala," said a spokesman for FIFA. "We are studying the issue and therefore there are no other comments at this stage," he said.
