LONDON (Reuters) – FIFA is planning to investigate sexual and physical assaults on Afghan players. The accusations were rejected by the local football federation, the Guardian newspaper reported.
"FIFA is investigating these serious charges," AFP said in a statement published in the British newspaper, adding that it rejected any "tolerance" for such abuses.
The International Federation emphasized that it acted with respect for the conservative nature of Afghan society and that it cooperated with the parties concerned to shed light on the facts.
The British newspaper pointed out in its report, citing sources close to the women's national team, that the players' exploitation took place in Afghanistan and sometimes at the headquarters of the local game federation, as well as during A training camp organized by the team in Jordan last February.
Former leader Khaleda Bhopal, who fled the country after receiving death threats, repeatedly referred to earlier discrimination against women in Afghanistan.
"This story is not true," General Ali Reza Aghazadeh, general secretary of the local federation in Kabul, told reporters on Saturday. "No football player has been sexually harassed."
"It's easy for us to cancel the women's football team because of the Taliban presence, but we do not want to go back," he said. "We support the women's football team."
