Apple started work early on the foldable iPhone device, a potential competitor of similar devices from Samsung and others, though it only plans to make minor changes to this year’s iPhone lineup.
Cupertino has developed prototypes of foldable displays for internal testing, but has not stepped up plans to launch a foldable iPhone.
Development work has not extended beyond screens, which means Apple does not yet have full prototypes of the phone in its labs, according to a new report from Bloomberg.
Like Samsung’s Galaxy Fold and Motorola’s Razr, the foldable iPhone allows Apple to create a device with a larger screen in a smaller size.
The company has internally discussed a number of foldable screen sizes, including a screen similar to the 6.7-inch display on the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Current foldable phones have 6 and 8 inch screens when they are not open.
Apple’s folding screens that are being tested, like Samsung’s, include an invisible hinge with the electronics behind the screen.
Other companies, including Microsoft, have recently released devices with visible seams separating two screens.
This marks a radical departure for Apple, and it’s safe to say that its flagship, screen-touching, full-screen smartphone is the most successful consumer tech product in history, which has helped make Apple the world’s most valuable company.
However, it’s possible that the foldable iPhone will be years away or ultimately not hit the market.
It should be noted that Apple has not publicly shown any interest in making a foldable phone, although it rarely indicates interest before entering the new product category.
The main competitors are pioneer foldable devices, and Samsung and Motorola have released several generations of foldable phones, with the original Galaxy Fold launching in April 2019.
