Google was fined 500 million euros ($ 593 million) in France after the search giant failed to strike a fair deal with publishers to use their news content on its platform.

Alphabet Inc., the company that owns Google, has ignored a 2020 decision to negotiate in good faith to post snippets of articles on the Google News service.

“The fine of 500 million euros takes into account the exceptional gravity of the violations observed and the further delay in Google’s behavior in the proper application of the law”, declared Isabel de Silva, president of Agence France-Presse .

The confrontation between Google and the owners of news organizations and services has been brewing for a long time. European publishers have been paying regulators for more than a decade to deal with the dominance of Google, which has generated billions of euros in advertising revenue. Complaints were lodged in France in 2019 by groups representing newspapers and magazines as well as Agence France-Presse.

Tuesday’s fine is the French regulator’s latest show of force, as France competes with its German-led European Union counterparts to be the region’s most powerful regulator for US tech companies .
