Google continues to update iPhone apps including YouTube
The vast majority of Google’s iOS apps haven’t been updated since early December. Three of Google’s smaller apps saw new releases along those lines late last month, while YouTube for iPhone and iPad was updated tonight.
After the last YouTube release (15.49.4) on December 7, iPhone owners see version 15.49.6 tonight. The official release date is February 13, which makes Google’s update very strange this weekend. As always, the YouTube team continued to repeat with comments from the public version:
Regular problems, improved performance and drinking lots of coffee
While it’s normal for tech companies to shut down during the winter break, updates typically need to be renewed in mid-January. Some expected the lack of versions to be due to the app’s feed labels, but YouTube filled out the app’s privacy section long before this update today.
In fact, it’s the YouTube family (music, TV, and studio), excluding kids, with Apple’s requirements updated in early February. Google has publicly declared its commitment to adding labels, and the current number exceeds dozens of apps:
As Google’s iOS apps are updated with new features or bug fixes, you’ll see updates in our app page listings that include new app privacy. These ratings represent the maximum categories of data that can be collected, i.e. if you are using all the features and services available in the app.
YouTube’s update comes when iPhone owners earlier this week encountered a “This app is out of date” message while trying to sign in with a Google Account. There was no real security issue and the warning was quickly removed.
Hope more updates for Google apps will appear soon. The latest Chrome for iOS is particularly late at 24 days, although the feature inequality has not been lost due to the list of server-side updates in most Google services. For example, the Google app received the central overhaul of the way search results are displayed last month.
