LONDON (Reuters) – Lewis Hamilton continued his momentum on the weekend of the Australian Grand Prix to win the first pole after a fierce competition from fellow countryman Valtier Potas, with a strange performance from Ferrari.
Hamilton took pole position for the eighth time at Albert Park and sixth respectively.
The Briton broke a new record of 1: 20.486 minutes, advancing 0.122 seconds on his compatriots Botas, to make sure the first-class Mercedes was on the starting line.
However, Ferrari failed to post a solid performance and continued to suffer surprise, contrary to expectations, with Sebastian Vettel in third place at 0.704 seconds from Hamilton.
As the day of the Italian hive deteriorated, Max Verstauben of Red Bull had managed to move Charles Löckler away from the starting line.
Likewise, last year Haas was in the best position, Roman Grosjean finishing sixth with Kevin Magnussen.
Rising star Lando Norris made a good performance in his first official appearance, placing McLaren in eighth place ahead of Kimi Raikkonen of Alfa Romeo, while Sergio Perez was in the top ten.
the first part
At the beginning of the first section, Ferrari was heading for the ring on Medium, while Vettel managed to record a fast time and 0.8 seconds slower than Hamilton in the race. To be the fastest of the session at 1: 22.017 minutes.
The match ended with the first surprises, Pierre Gasley having failed to qualify for the second section and finishing in 17th place behind Lance Stroll.
Carlos Sainz will begin his career with McLaren in 18th place after being shaken by a commotion as budding team mate Lando Norris was eighth in the game.
The Williams rebounded as expected, with George Russell in 19th place against Robert Kubtsa, which added to the fact that the latter hit the flank at the exit of the 10th lap, causing him a hole in the right rear tire.
Section II
All the pilots used soft tires in the second section, where the first progress of Potas was in the foreground.
But everyone – with the exception of Leclair – came back for extra turns while Hamilton clocked an initial record time of 1: 21.014 minutes.
For his part, Vettel went off the track during his second quick attempt and stormed the grassy and gritty area, forcing him to cancel.
The center battle was very hot but led to the departure of the Renault Nico Halkenberg and Daniel Ricardo duo and the launch of the 11th and 12th respectively.
Alexandre Albon will start his first Formula 1 race in 13th place ahead of Daniel Cavite, while Antonio Giovenez is the driver of Alfa Romeo.
