Prince Hamzah bin Al-Hussein pledged allegiance to his brother King Abdullah on Tuesday after mediation by the royal family, two days after being under house arrest and accused of trying to destabilize the country.
The royal court said Prince Hamzah signed a letter making himself available to the king after a meeting Monday with Prince Hassan, the king’s uncle, and other princes.
“I place myself in the hands of His Majesty the King … I will remain committed to the constitution of the dear Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan,” Prince Hamzah said in the message issued by the palace.
In a previous tweet from the royal palace, it was stated that the king had entrusted Prince Hassan, who is also the former crown prince, to take charge of the case, and that Prince Hamzah had accepted family mediation in this case.
Reuters earlier reported that the prince, Hamza bin Al-Hussein, had said in an audio recording that he would not comply with the military’s demands not to communicate with the outside world and to remain silent, after been under house arrest.
The former crown prince and half-brother of the Jordanian monarch, in the audio, vowed to “degenerate” after restricting his activities.
Prince Hamzah said: “When the Chief of Staff says something like appearing, tweeting or communicating with people … I think that’s unacceptable.”
On Sunday, Jordanian authorities announced that they had thwarted a “conspiracy against the Kingdom” in which Prince Hamzah participated, arrested at least 16 suspects and charged them with “incitement and conspiracy with foreign parties”.
Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister Ayman Safadi confirmed at a press conference that “Hamza bin Al-Hussein and others have communicated with outside parties to undermine Jordan’s security and stability.”
However, Queen Noor, the widow of the late Jordanian monarch King Hussein bin Talal, described the allegations made yesterday by Jordanian authorities against her son, former Crown Prince Hamzah, that he took actions and activities used to undermine the stability of the Kingdom as a “sinister slander”.
“I pray that truth and justice will triumph for all the innocent victims of this evil slander. I hope God blesses and protects them,” she wrote in a tweet on Twitter.
“Internet disconnected”
The French News Agency quoted residents of the capital, Amman, as saying that authorities had cut the internet in the upscale Dabouq neighborhood where Prince Hamzah and other princes and princesses resided.
Prince Hamzah was heir to the throne, according to his father’s will, when his brother Abdullah became king in 1999. But the new king removed his half-brother from office in 2004 and appointed his son Hussein as crown prince.
Safadi said investigations revealed that a person linked to external security services contacted Prince Hamzah’s wife and offered her a plane to take her out of Jordan, “but he did not disclose the identity of the person concerned.
