London – Some parts of the human brain can contract when it weighs heavily, British researchers said Monday.
"This effect is found mostly in people who accumulate fat in the middle of the body," said the researchers in their study, published on Neurologist Neurologist's website.
At the same time, however, it is not clear if weight gain is causing changes in the brain, or if these changes help gain weight.
The researchers have not attempted to study the consequences of brain changes that have been found to be present in overweight people. There is no doubt among scientists that weight gain can be the cause of many diseases such as diabetes, joint pain, circulatory system diseases and breathing difficulties.
It is unclear whether this increase is also a threat to the brain and the magnitude of the risk, but researchers have already found, through previous studies, the existence of such a risk.
Under the supervision of Mark Hammer, a sports medicine specialist at Loughborough University, scientists have studied the impact of being overweight on what is called gray matter. in the brain, in particular. They then assessed the data for 962 55-year-olds. They have body mass index (BMI) of these people, which measures body weight based on height as well as the waist / hips ratio.
Nineteen percent of these people were obese, with a mass index of 30 or more. The researchers then determined the brain size of these people using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to determine the size of the gray and white substance.
They concluded that the volume of gray matter among those with a high mass index and those with a waist / hip ratio was lower than those with a normal waist / hip ratio.
