Scientists who drank three hot cups of tea or coffee at temperatures above 60 degrees Celsius increased their risk of developing the disease by 90 percent, the scientists said.

This temperature is below the official WHO guidelines, which recommend drinking a cup of coffee at temperatures below 65 degrees Celsius. Drinking tea at over 75 degrees Celsius increases the risk of infection.

Researchers at the University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, Iran, said their results apply to other hot drinks, including coffee and hot chocolate.

Researchers believe that heat can injure the esophagus, causing inflammation that can damage DNA and produce energy-causing carcinogens. It can also weaken its ability to function as a barrier against harmful toxins such as alcohol and smoking.

People aged 60 to 70 years are the most exposed to cancer of the esophagus, including symptoms of difficulty swallowing, persistent indigestion or burns, loss of appetite and weight, and pain in the top of the abdomen, chest and back.
