The “WhatsApp” app on Friday officially activated the “payments” service to send money to India.

This feature is based on India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) framework to facilitate the transfer of funds. So if you are in India, you can use the WhatsApp app to send and receive money from your friends and family which is simple and straightforward.

How to activate the WhatsApp payment service

To start paying on WhatsApp, you must first link your bank account to the service. UPI basically works with your phone number, and the service works with all major banks in India.

Even if you don’t have a UPI account set up with your bank, you will be able to use the payment option in WhatsApp, as it will create a new UPI ID for you.

To make payments on “WhatsApp”, follow these steps:

• Open the “WhatsApp” application from the application drawer or the home screen.

• Click on the three vertical dots in the upper right corner.

• Choose “Payments”.

• Select the option “Add a new payment method”.

• Click on Accept.

• Choose your bank from the list. This must be your main account (UPI).

You will now need to verify your phone number. Make sure that the “WhatsApp” number you are using is the same one registered in your bank account, then click “Verify by SMS” to authenticate your bank account.

• Click “Authorize” to allow the “WhatsApp” application to verify that the card (SIM) used in the device is the card registered in your bank account.

• Click “Authorize” again to allow WhatsApp to send texts authenticating your account.

• WhatsApp will now check with your bank and extract information from all accounts registered with your number. Select the account you want to use to complete the payment setup.

• Press (Done) to complete the setup (WhatsApp Pay).
