These attacks can take the form of WhatsApp messages sent by attackers posing as one of your closest friends.
The “friend” asks you to share a six-digit code that you are about to receive via text message. Once you have shared the code, you can no longer access your account.
This is because the number was actually the account verification code used to link your WhatsApp account to a new phone number.
Fortunately, there are several ways to lock down your account and protect it from prying eyes, and a lot of them involve making it harder for hackers to log into your account by adding extra layers of security.
1. Never give out the six-digit code
You should never show the six-digit code to anyone to verify your WhatsApp account, which is texted and is just for you, don’t send it to your friends, family, siblings and mostly share it not with strangers.
And WhatsApp sends you the code every time you try to sign in on a new device with your phone number.
Hackers can trick you into handing them over to break into your account.
2. Enable two-step verification
You can associate your PIN or PIN more closely with your credit or debit card.
However, you can also assign a PIN to a number of online accounts, including your WhatsApp profile.
WhatsApp uses your six-digit PIN code to verify that you are trying to sign in to your account.
To set one, open WhatsApp and go to Settings and tap on 2-step verification, tap on Activate and enter the PIN of your choice.
WhatsApp will sometimes ask you for this PIN code when you use the app to verify your identity.
This prevents hackers from reading your texts if they know your account password, but not your PIN.
Then the PIN code will also be requested to add contacts.
If you want, you can add an email address where you can recover the account if you forgot your PIN code.
3. Adjust your privacy settings
WhatsApp has a number of privacy settings which, if enabled, prevent hackers from knowing who you are.
This, in turn, can make it more difficult to use frequently used social engineering techniques to break into people’s accounts.
One setting worth changing is who you share your profile picture, status, and other details with.
You can prevent people who are not in your contacts from seeing this information, including your phone number.
Go to Settings> Account> Privacy and select “Your Contacts” for anything you want to hide.
