Huawei has grown throughout 2018 to bridge the gap with Apple, which has seen its largest decline since 2016
Huawei's China brand of smart phones experienced further growth as it successfully bridged its gap with Apple's market leader, even as global smartphone sales to end-users came to an end in late 2018.
Total smartphone sales worldwide totaled 408.4 million units, an increase of only 0.1% in the fourth quarter of 2017, according to the Gartner, Inc. research firm.
While the demand for moderately priced smartphones has remained strong in the market, demand for advanced smartphones has continued to slow in the fourth quarter of 2018, said Anshul Gupta, Gartner's Director of Research.
In 2018, global smartphone sales to end users grew 1.2% year-on-year to reach 1.6 billion units.
North America, Asia-Pacific and China recorded the worst drop in the year, reaching respectively 6.8%, 3.4% and 3.0%.
"In mature markets, the demand for smartphones largely depends on the attractiveness of the major smartphones of the three biggest brands – Samsung, Apple and Huawei – two of which have seen a decline in 2018." Huawei was the exception.
In the last quarter of 2018, Huawei sold more than 60 million smartphones and recorded the strongest growth of the quarter among the five largest smart phone providers in the world (37.6%).

"In addition to its strengths for China and Europe, Huawei has continued to increase its investments in Asia-Pacific, Latin America and the Middle East to boost growth," Gupta said.
"Huawei also took advantage of growth opportunities thanks to Honor's continued expansion in the second half of 2018, especially in emerging markets, which allowed Huawei to increase its market share to 13, 0% in 2018. "
