Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei lost its place at the top of global smartphone sellers in the third quarter of the year, while China’s Xiaomi was ranked third on the list, according to research firm Canalys.
Huawei, which is subject to US sanctions, sold 51.7 million phones in the third quarter, 23% less year on year, according to what was reported by the French News Agency.
At the same time, its South Korean rival, Samsung, sold 80.2 million devices, an increase of 2% in one year, and once again became the world’s largest manufacturer, according to the same study published yesterday (Thursday ).
The administration of US President Donald Trump is targeting Huawei, suspected of spying for Beijing, which the group denies. Huawei has been blacklisted to prevent it from obtaining basic US technology for its phones.
As of September, the company is no longer able to supply its advanced devices, for example the new “Keri” chips, and does not have the capacity to manufacture them in-house.
It is also no longer able to access updates to the Android system, which is the operating system of the US group Google, which dominates phones. And its rival, Xiaomi, seems to have taken advantage of this situation. “The group took risks by setting high productivity targets, and the bet paid off,” said Mu Jia, analyst at Canalys.
Consequently; The Chinese manufacturer sold 47.1 million smartphones (up 45% in one year) during the July to September period, despite a 1% drop in global demand compared to the third quarter of 2019.
Mu said, “There are parallels between (Xiaomi), which produced 14.5 million more devices, and (Huawei), which produced 15.1 million fewer devices.” Xiaomi was founded in 2010 and has seen tremendous growth in recent years by offering advanced devices at reasonable prices and initially selling them directly through the internet.
The brand was unknown abroad five years ago and has been ridiculed for its products inspired by “Apple” “iPhone” phones. And this phone has slipped to fourth place in the world after “Xiaomi”. It sold 43.2 million units in the third quarter (up 1% year-on-year). Vivo and Oppo, two other Chinese brands, are respectively ranked fifth and sixth on the list.
