A feeling that you can get every now and then as time flies, but you didn’t know the reason, and if you did know the reason, you would be surprised.

The odd reason researchers cite is a frightening earth fact that affects the number of hours of the day, which can lead to the elimination of seconds from a minute.

The truth was explained by Peter Weberley, senior researcher of the Time and Frequency Group at the British National Physical Laboratory.

He said the current year 2021 sees the Earth spinning faster than at any time in the past 50 years.

This means that time flies faster, according to the British newspaper “Daily Mail”.

Earth rotation

The Earth rotates around its axis faster than usual, so the usual length of the day is just under 24 hours.

Time watchers around the world are now wondering whether to skip a second every now and then due to the change and accurately return time in its path as the Earth spins.

The solution found was the addition of a “negative leap second”, which has already been added by a total of 27 leap seconds since the 1970s.

This is to keep the time in line with solar time.

So because for decades, the Earth took a little more than 24 hours to complete its rotation.

But since last year, it took a little less.

Atomic clock

Peter explained that since the 1960s atomic clocks have kept extremely precise records of the length of the day.

And he found that over the past 50 years, it took Earth less than 24 hours (86,400 seconds) to complete a revolution.

But in the middle of last year 2020, that long-standing trend reversed and the days are now consistently less than 86,400 seconds.

On July 19, 2020, the day was 1.4602 milliseconds to full 24 hours shorter.

This is the shortest day since records began, and prior to that the shortest day was recorded in 2005, but that number was beaten 28 times last year.

“On average, days now go from 0.5 seconds to less than 24 full hours.

“This small waste of time can only be detected at the atomic level and has far-reaching effects.”
