The Sultanate of Brunei has defended its right to enforce Sharia-based laws that will allow adultery to be applied to homosexuals and those with extramarital affairs, despite growing international criticism. Brunei will start enforcing the Islamic border on April 3 by applying the death penalty, including stoning, sodomy, adultery and rape, and punish the thieves by cutting their hands, Reuters said. The law will be fully implemented as of this week, including the points adopted for the first time in 2014, announced the Prime Minister's Office in a statement released Saturday.
"The law aims to respect and protect the legitimate rights of all individuals, society and those of any faith or race," the statement said. The envisaged application of Islamic law has been widely criticized, politicians in Europe and the United States have attacked and expressed their concerns in Brunei. Famous actor George Clooney also called for a boycott of Brunei-owned luxury hotels, including the Beverly Hills Hotel, Dorset in London and Plaza Atenea in Paris. British and European politicians, Amnesty International and Asian human rights groups attacked Brunei's projects and expressed their concerns. Sultan Hassan al-Bolkiah, 72, is the world's second-longest leader and prime minister in this oil-rich country. He is ranked among the richest people in the world.
