In the United States, health officials have investigated a hundred cases of mysterious lung disease, which would be linked to the use of electronic cigarettes in 14 US states.
According to the British "Independent" newspaper, most people infected are teenagers and young people. A large number of them have been transferred to the hospital and some are placed in intensive care for the respiratory system.
Medical authorities said it was unclear whether patients would be fully recovered, while citizens should remain alert to severe lung injury.
Symptoms observed prior to patient admission included breathing difficulties, shortness of breath, and chest pain.
The authorities are collaborating with health departments from at least five US states – California, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin – to determine the cause of the mysterious disease after a "cluster of lung diseases." Teenagers and young people have already used electronic cigarettes.
The paper pointed out that at least 31 cases had been confirmed by state officials infected with the mysterious disease, and the CDC said it was investigating 94 possible cases in 14 states.
Although some cases are similar, officials said they did not know whether the diseases were related to electronic cigarettes alone or to certain ingredients or contaminants by which they were inhaled.
According to health officials, patients described smoking, called vaping, by heating a liquid, a process that produces vapors that users inhale and re-extract with a variety of substances such as nicotine, marijuana-based and "homemade fermentation". .
Highlighting growing concern, CDC officials say inform health care systems and doctors across the country about diseases and what to watch for. Ministries of health have also issued warnings.
The popularity of e-cigarettes has increased over the past decade despite little research on their long-term effects. In recent years, health authorities have warned against smoking among underage adolescents.
