Famous pop singer Rihanna sparked controversy in India after she posted a photo of herself topless in a lingerie ad on social media, hanging the necklace of the god Ganesha, the main Hindu deity.
Rihanna posted the photo on her Twitter account, which has more than 100 million subscribers, and on her Instagram page, which has 91.4 million subscribers, as part of the “Savage X Fenty” clothing promotions.
Social media users and politicians in India called her post “insulting” and accused her of disrespecting Hindu deities and harming local sentiments.
“It’s horrible how Rihanna mocks our beloved Hindu god Ganesha,” lawmaker Ram Kadam wrote on Twitter.
He added: “It reveals how Rihanna has no respect for Indian culture and traditions and our issues here.”
The right-wing Hindu World Council said it had filed complaints with police against “Instagram” and “Twitter,” and demanded action against Rihanna’s social media accounts.
The photos from Rihanna’s photoshoot come just weeks after she harassed the Indian government for commenting on massive farmer protests, which pose a huge challenge in New Delhi.
