NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – People with pneumonia can treat themselves by breathing sugar, according to a new British study.
Researchers at the University of Manchester, according to the newspaper 'Mirror', claim that inhaling sugar stimulates the immune system in the lungs to fight bacterial infections.
"The availability of glucose increases inflammation, which boosts the immune system and makes it more protective of the bacteria responsible for pneumonia," said Professor Andrew MacDonald, who was leading the study.
The study, which was conducted on mice, examined specialized white blood cells called macrophages, which act as aspirators of the immune system, thereby eliminating harmful organisms and their residues.
