James Bond … a cinema icon in search of an heir

After Daniel Craig last played James Bond in the latest film in the series, which opens next week, a question arises as to who the heir (or heiress) is on the big screen.

Daniel Craig has retained this role for 15 years, since his debut in Casino Royale in 2006.

Finding a replacement for Craig in this role is no small feat: in the five films in which he plays Agent 007, including “Skyfall” and “Specter”, the British actor has managed to leave his mark on it. character without departing from the main pillars laid by its creator, Ian Fleming, seven decades ago.

Laurent Perriot, specialist in the adventures of James Bond, told AFP that Daniel Craig “elevated the human side”, focusing on the idea of James Bond, the “credible, suspicious, fearful, unscrupulous killer” .

A year after the death of Sean Connery, who first introduced this character to world cinema in the sixties of the twentieth century by presenting him as a hero brimming with virility to the point of hype, the search for the new James Bond returned to the foreground.

forward a message?
Will producers seize the opportunity to take a step forward in diversity, or even play a female role, and completely break with the stereotypes embedded in Ian Fleming’s writing?

Guillaume Evin, author of several books on James Bond, explains: “On paper, the actor in the role of James Bond must be young, strong and attractive, this trilogy on which the character is based. At that time, the typical form of the character was in the image of a white man, but nothing prevented from imagining a black or Asian James Bond … “.

Such choices would send a message to a stereotypically self-rated film industry: The hypothesis of a black British actor Idris Elba (“The Wire”, “Luther”) endorsed by former star Pierce Brosnan has attracted many racist comments.

As for the idea of a woman taking on the role of James Bond, it seems unlikely to come true: in the film “No Time to Die”, James Bond tries to take advantage of a period of retirement and hands the young woman the torch by giving her the number “007”.

On screen, 33-year-old black British actress Lashana Lynch disguised herself as a spy but did not take her name, in an effort to “showcase female characters” without replacing James Bond himself, according to Guillaume Evin.

This created what looks like a small image the actress paid for in an offensive social media comments campaign.

In response to a question from “Radio Times” magazine on this subject, Daniel Craig said that it was necessary to “give better roles to women and actors of color”.

“Why should a woman play the part of James Bond, when you can find roles of the same quality as a character in James Bond that can be attributed to a woman?”

name exchange
The possibilities remain open as to the identity of the character’s next heir, the choice being able to fall on a known face, as happened with Roger Moore, or on the use of a lesser known actor. The actor’s nationality has not been determined, so is he British or American?

Among the most popular names in this context is the actor Tom Hardy, who has proven himself in several works, including “Mad Max: Fury Road”, or even Christopher Nolan, who played the role of the villain in “The Dark Knight Rises”.

But the age of the latter (44) can be a negative factor against him, as the organizers seek to ensure that the next heir of the character assumes this role until 2030-2035.

Many names are traded among betting pioneers including Bridgerton hero Reg-Jean Page, British small-screen favorite James Norton and Luke Evans, who has appeared in huge productions including “Fast and Furious”.
