Japan had its first solar eclipse on Sunday in 2019.

This is the first eclipse in Tokyo in three years. Japan's NHK said the moon had partially blocked the sun this morning.

The moon has blocked about 40% of the sun in the northern city of Sapporo, while only about 30% of the sun has been in Tokyo.

The agency said that citizens had gathered to watch this phenomenon after wearing eye protection goggles.

Japanese citizens will be able to witness a new solar eclipse on Dec. 26, the General Astronomical Observatory announced.
