The company said in a statement that “the legal steps taken today form part of Nissan’s policy to hold Ghosn liable for damages and financial losses suffered by the company as a result of the violations he has committed.”
Ghosn, who also ran French car company Renault, had been in France since he fled Japan in January before being brought to justice. He denies wrongdoing.
“The civil lawsuit filed by Nissan is the continuation of a totally unreasonable internal investigation involving the malicious intentions of part of Nissan’s high command, and the illogical arrests and accusations made by prosecutors,” Ghosn said in a statement sent. by e-mail.
The civil lawsuit is taking place alongside another criminal in a Tokyo court for former chief executive in April Greg Kelly, who along with Ghosn was accused of hiding his true profits.
At the end of 2019, Ghosn managed to flee Japan via a Hollywood method, while he was on “parole” because of the charges against him.
Ghosn said he escaped from Japan because the Asian country’s legal system had not treated him fairly, denying he was involved in the alleged.
