A German court found German footballer Jérôme Botting guilty of assaulting his partner and fined him 1.8 million euros.
Jerome Boateng appeared in Munich court to face assault charges against his ex-girlfriend in 2018.
The player is accused of injuring his ex-girlfriend, known as “Shirin S” and mother of his twin daughters, during an argument that broke out between them while they were on vacation.
Prosecutors charged the former Bayern Munich defender and the 2014 World Cup-winning German national team with intentionally causing bodily harm.
Boateng, 33, has denied the allegations.
Boateng could have faced up to five years in prison, under German domestic violence law.
Boateng, dressed in a dark blue suit, was accompanied by his bodyguards when he arrived in the courtroom with his lawyer, Kay Walden, on Thursday morning.
Before the trial began, prosecutors said Boateng threw a lamp and a cooler at his ex-girlfriend during the alleged assault in July 2018.
A prosecution spokeswoman told reporters that Boateng insulted his ex-girlfriend and pulled her by the hair.
During the hearing, Boateng denied assaulting his ex-girlfriend, giving a different version of events.
He said a verbal altercation erupted between them after tension escalated during a game, adding that his ex-girlfriend acted aggressively and cursed and hit him, causing him to injure his lip. When he tried to push her away from him, she fell to the ground.
The court heard testimony from 4 witnesses, according to German channel TRL.
The hearing was supposed to take place last December, but it was postponed because one of the witnesses was unable to attend.
Boateng has had a rich and successful career, both at the club level and at the national level.
He won 22 titles with Bayern, including 2 copies of the Champions League and 9 copies of the German League. Boateng was transferred for free to French club Lyon over the summer after his contract with Bayern Munich expired.
In February, Boateng’s former partner, model Kazia Leinhardt, was found dead after committing suicide in an apartment in Berlin.
Berlin police have found his body in the absence of Boateng, who was playing the Club World Cup in Qatar for Bayern Munich.
Some reports said he ended his relationship with her shortly before her suicide.
