The country suffers from a severe shortage of antiretroviral drugs, posing a serious threat to the lives of people living with HIV, as the government seeks to reassure the population, said non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Gabon.

"Our scientists are working on finding alternatives to currently inaccessible treatments and we are confident that they will be equally effective," J. Patrik Obiang, Secretary General of the Ministry of Health, told the press.

HIV infection rates in Gabon are low, with only 4.1% of the population infected, according to statistics previously released by the Ministry of Health.
