Superstars Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez attend Joe Biden’s inauguration as President of the United States.
Gaga campaigned for Biden and appeared with him on the eve of the presidential election last November.
Gaga is expected to sing the national anthem at the groundbreaking ceremony on January 20. Lopez, who also backed Biden on the election campaign, will host a separate musical.
After the inauguration ceremony, Tom Hanks will present a special TV program with the participation of many stars.
The 90-minute program is called “Celebrating America” and will feature musicians John Bon Jovi, Demi Lovato, Justin Timberlake and Ant Clemmons. The program airs on ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC and MSNBC.
The committee overseeing Biden’s inauguration said it would “celebrate the start of a new national journey to a united America” and “demonstrate the resilience, heroism and unified commitment of the American people to work together as a as a nation for recovery and reconstruction “.
Gaga appeared alongside Biden in 2016 during his campaign to fight sexual assault on college campuses, while Lopez took part in an online chat with him in October.
When Biden is sworn in, Washington, DC will still be under a state of emergency imposed after the assault on Capitol Hill – the seat of Parliament – on January 6. There will be over 10,000 members of the National Guard in the capital and around 5,000 more will be on standby.
Joe Biden’s team announced that attendance at the inauguration would be “extremely limited”, in line with social distancing rules due to the coronavirus outbreak. The team urged Americans to avoid visiting the capital.
Donald Trump will not attend the ceremony after protesting the election results, becoming the first president to miss his successor’s inauguration since 1869.
