LONDON (Reuters) – Liverpool won the European Super Cup by beating compatriot Chelsea 5-4 on penalties after drawing 1-1 in regulation and 2-2 in overtime on Wednesday in Istanbul.
Chelsea opened the scoring with French striker Olivier Giroud (36) before Senegal's Sadio Mane equalized early in the second period, then the same player added the second goal for Liverpool (s 95) , then Chelsea equalized by the Italian Jorginho (s 101 penalty).
It was the first time this match between two English teams after Liverpool was crowned in the Champions League last season and winner of the Chelsea Europa League.
