Next Thursday, the sky of Makkah Al-Mukarramah will witness a rare astronomical phenomenon. Where the moon will be perpendicular to the Kaaba, coinciding with its appearance in the full moon phase.

This perpendicular is the first in 2021, when the moon will reach the moment of full moon at an angle of 180 degrees from the sun at the time of (ten and 16 minutes in the evening, Mecca time), and thus complete half of its orbit. around the earth during this month.

Today, Monday, local media quoted engineer Majid Abu Zahra, president of the Jeddah Astronomical Society, as saying, “The moon at 12.43 minutes and 34 seconds in the evening, Makkah Al-Mukarramah time, will be at an altitude of 89.57.46. degrees, and its disc is 99.9% fully illuminated and at a distance of 381,125 kilometers. “

He pointed out that “after being baptized, the moon will remain visible in the sky for the rest of the night until it sets with the sunrise on Friday.”

Abu Zahra pointed out that “the phenomenon of orthogonality is one of the scientific methods to confirm the correctness of calculations of the movement of celestial bodies, including the moon, which makes the determination of its position very precise”.

It is also possible to use this astronomical phenomenon – according to Abu Zahra – to know the direction of the qiblah in a simple way from several regions of the world, as the ancients did.
