Manchester United has condemned the racist attack against French star Paul Pogba after missing a crucial penalty in a Premier League game Monday night.
Manchester United is striving to identify people who mistreated Paul Pogba after missing a penalty in a 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Reuters reported.
Pogba got a penalty late, but Wolverhampton goalkeeper Roy Patricio saved the ball, Sky News said.
The tie cost United first place and resulted in racist abuse by some fans of the French player.
"People who have expressed their views do not represent the values of our great club and it is encouraging to see the majority of our fans also condemning it on social media," United said in a statement.
"Manchester United will never tolerate racist or discriminatory facts, and we have long supported an initiative that calls for equality for all."
"We will work to identify the few people who have participated in these events and we will do what we can for them, and we encourage social media companies to take action on these incidents."
United's defender, Harry McGuire, has described what has happened as "disgusting" and called on social media companies to verify the identity of users to prevent players from falling victim to Repeated abuse.
"Social media has to do something – everything has to be verified with a passport or driver's license," writes Maguire on Twitter. "Stop those who create multiple accounts to guide abuse."
United striker Marcus Rashford also expressed his full support for his teammate: "Manchester United is like a family, Paul Pogba is an important part of this family.
