Mercedes-Benz’s latest self-driving concept car, the Vision AVTR, features a “brain-computer interface” that allows passengers to control various functions with their thoughts.

To operate, users focus on the digital dashboard lights, and the car’s artificial intelligence recognizes their choice and initiates a preset function. This could include changing the radio station, opening a window, answering a phone call, or possibly sending the car on a predetermined route.

The BCI device measures neuronal activity in the cortex in real time. “Mercedes” said in a statement that it analyzes measured brain waves and identifies points of light that direct the user’s focus and attention.

The higher the concentration, the more active the neurons. Then the device activates the target function in the car.

The Vision AVTR was first shown at the Consumer Electronics Show 2020 in Las Vegas, but visitors to the IAA Mobility Auto Show in Munich this week can experience the brain-computer interface for the first time.

After a one-minute calibration process, a device attached to the user’s head analyzes their brain waves and triggers a specific function.

“BCI technology works completely independent of speech and touch. This opens up revolutionary possibilities for intuitive interaction with the vehicle, ”said Britta Seeger, Sales Manager, Mercedes-Benz AG.

And the German automaker isn’t giving up on voice and touch controls – in 2018 the “Hey Mercedes” voice assistant made its debut, and recently it previewed the MBUX Hyperscreen, an in-dash dashboard. 53-inch zero layer and an infotainment system for the first time in the EQS electric sedan.

All of this revolves around trying to “radically simplify the operation of the vehicle,” said Marcus Schaefer, chief operating officer of Mercedes-Benz.

Instead of a traditional steering wheel, drivers place their hands on a multifunctional control panel, a measure intended to mimic the distinctive details of the Avatar.

According to Mercedes, “life comes back inside and the car recognizes the driver through their heartbeat and breathing.”

Mercedes also touts the Vision’s eco-friendliness: in addition to its compostable graphene-based battery, the car’s interior is made from vegan leather and straw.
