After Apple ditches Intel, will Microsoft do so too? A Bloomberg report revealed that Microsoft is working on designing server processors and possibly future ARM-based Surface computers rather than Intel.
Currently, most AZURE servers are powered by Intel processors for servers, and Surface computers also use Intel processors, but that could change in the future.
Microsoft has previously worked with Qualcomm and AMD to develop processors for Surface Laptop 2 and Surface Pro X, which has sparked discussions about its intention to move away from Intel.
AMD has developed a specially modified version of the Ryzen processor for Surface Laptop 3.
The biggest concern Intel needs to have in mind is not the individual user computer industry, but the servers, which will have the biggest impact on its business.
Intel currently dominates the server processor market and AMD has EPYC processors which retain a low market share.
The trend towards ARM architecture in server processors has already been realized by Amazon with its Graviton2 processors, which it launched last year and power AWS servers.
The ARM architecture offers cost savings, superior performance and lower power consumption, which prompted Apple to adopt it in the new Mac computers recently released.
