An 89-year-old man was seriously injured and one person was reported missing on Saturday after an explosion in a garage in the French city of Bordeaux, according to firefighters.
The results of preliminary investigations indicate that a gas explosion occurred which destroyed the small building and severely damaged two neighboring buildings.
City officials reported that the 89-year-old was grappling with death.
So far, nine other people have been slightly injured in the blast, while around 70 firefighters are working at the site.
Emergency devices use dogs and equipment to remove debris, searching for the injured man’s partner.
The explosion occurred shortly after eight in the morning in the Chartres district of the city in western France.
The windows of several neighboring stores were shattered by the explosion.
Lucy Birol, 21, said she was afraid when the windows “exploded”.
“Our window broke and fell on us,” she said.
We stepped on the glass and my friend was injured ”.
Mayal, 38, said she was asleep when she heard the explosion and her window shattered.
“I went out to find that an apartment had exploded,” she said.
And as gas supply to the neighborhood was cut off, Eric Destarak, a spokesperson for the gas distribution company, said: “We don’t yet know if it is a gas network or of cans. “
He added that firefighters had found gas cylinders inside the garage.
