More than 60 million cars bearing his signature. What do you know about Giorgio Giugiaro?

LONDON (AP) – During his 64-year career, Georgito Giugiaro has managed to design the most influential car in history.

Giorgio has designed more than 200 parts for automakers around the world, with more than 60 million cars on the street today. Although he is 81, he continues to work today with his son Fabrizio, under the roof of a new company called GFG Style.

In a telephone interview from his studio in Moncalieri, he said: "I have worked in the automotive sector, not out of passion, but as part of my creative practice."

Giugiaro has long been known as an art family, so the designer was supposed to follow a similar approach. Noting that Giorgio was more inclined to technical work, his father decided to enroll his son at the art school in the morning and at the artistic creation in the evening.

At the age of 22, the designer sees his first models come to life, including Bertone Gordon-Keeble GT models, Alfa Romeo 2600 and Guilia GT.

After making cars for Bertone, Giorgio transferred his company to rival company Ghia, where he designed the most beautiful cars, a Maserati Ghibli and the other Tommaso Mangosta.

In turn, the designer created his own company, Italdesign, in 1967, where he switched to producing cars.

Despite his growing popularity, Giorgetto refused to put badges on the cars that he designed. Sending thousands of badges every day will cost you a lot of money and customers do not care about the designer of the car.

In 1976, Giorgio designed the Lotus Esprit, which became James Bond's Spy Who Loved Me the following year. The car, which appeared in underwater scenes, was purchased by businessman Elon Mesk in 2013 for about $ 1 million.

Shortly after, Giorgio created the DeLorean car, chosen by director Robert Zemex and producer Bob Gale, for the movie "Back to the Future" in 1985.

Today, the designer no longer works for Italdesign, where Volkswagen acquired 90% of the company shares in 2010 and 10% in 2015.

However, Giorgio continues to design cars. One of his latest creations was presented at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show to celebrate his 80th birthday.
