My recent statements have been misunderstood … and I have received threats because of them!

After a period of artistic calm and demise, artist Mohamed Nagati returned with four works of art, including the highly successful “Hit a Teacher” series with Muhammad Rajab and Riyad Al-Khouli. Then his statement on sheikhs and art sparked a great storm of controversy and some accused him of trying to lead the trend of social networking sites.

In his interview with Al-Arabiya.net, Najati spoke about his recent problem, his statements and artistic works, the success of the series “Blow Mawalim” and “Girls Residence” and the problem of the series “Ya Ana Ya Gedo”.

* First, tell us about the reason for your claims that “art is more important than sheikhs” and the controversy that has aroused so much?

** I said exactly: “The artist is more important than sheikhs and university doctors.” This does not mean at all that I dare to underestimate the university doctor and the sheikhs, because I did not and will not dare to do it, and everyone is above my head, and they have all respect and reverence. They are distinguished scholars and professors, and this has been misunderstood. All I was trying to say is that the artist’s influence on society can be greater, faster, deeper, and more widespread, especially as the artist manages to reach all groups, sects and cultures through easy abstention, which it provides artistic content, and we are all aware that cinema and art can change human thought and consciousness, and that is why art is more dangerous, and I didn’t want to underestimate anyone in general, so what do you think of sheikhs and prominent religious scholars …

* Have you ever thought about apologizing for your statements which you feel have been misunderstood and is it true that you have received threats?

** Yes, unfortunately I have received many threats and have been subjected to slurs, slurs and slanders in all ways, and have faced severe attacks from some just for misunderstand what I am saying and not give myself the opportunity to simply explain, and I have thought to apologize or withdraw because my intention is right, and I will never back down by emphasizing the importance and danger of art on society and the formation of conscience.

* Some have said that you tried to grab attention and lead the trend with such a bold statement. What is your answer?

** This is of course a total lack of truth. It is impossible for me to seek to lead the trend to the detriment of my religious and my sheikhs, as well as the constants and traditions of religions. These are things that cannot be discussed, especially since I am a very religious person who is regular in my prayers and I belong to a working-class neighborhood, and it is not my religious or personal qualities to try to touch With all the constants to provoke controversy, but it was a very spontaneous opinion and it was offended, and his understanding was distorted, no more, no less, and I still am in my opinion.

* What do you think of the preoccupation of many stars with the idea of the trend and their obsession with it and the hustle and bustle of any crisis to lead it?

** Real and very sad about what some have achieved and the constant preoccupation with the idea of the trend and its disagreement, and there is no objection to the actor or artist leading the trend, but it must have a logical and technical reason, as these things must be related to the work he provides, but the story turns into personal things Besides falling into the trap of fabricating personal and health issues such as divorce news, relationships, illness and rumors, they are very trivial and sad things that offend all art. Some artists in this class hate the people inside them because of these behaviors, and unfortunately, as artists, people insult us with their sins and abuse us.

* Tell us about the series “Khattat Moualim” with Muhammad Ragab and the success he obtained

** It is a popular, social and humanitarian work which is very sophisticated and simple and carries very important messages, which disappeared some time ago from theater and art, such as values, traditions, conflicts, interdependent family relationships, dedication and intense loyalty among friends and co-workers, and because all popular work achieves great popularity if done with great skill, it succeeds The series “Moalem Strike” is very special, as I said, because it raises problems and questions of our Egyptian and popular reality in a very large percentage and touches very large groups present in Egypt.

* Did you expect positive reactions to the show, even though it airs in a winter season and away from the most watched seasons?

** I still agree with the opinion that good work comes in all the time and creates a season for itself, and this has been proven by a lot of work in recent years, and with regard to a teacher’s strike, I expected success, but not this way, and since the first episode I touched the follow-up of people at work, because they communicated with each Work maker and stopped me on the street to ask questions about events and their developments.

* What about the “Residence Girls” series and the “Ya Ana Ya Gedo” series?

** I participated in the series “Girls Residence” as a guest of honor at the beginning, and after the success and the interaction of the role in the episodes, I was surprised by a call from the director, writer and producer, and they asked to provide space for the role after it was successful, and I gave it a lot of praise, especially since the work was very popular with people.

As for the series “Ya Ana Ya Gedo”, it is also a very good series, which is a very light comedy series, but it met misfortune in many areas like the timing of the show and it was not. well marketed, especially since its producers were new in the field, and unfortunately some producers practice without a perfect knowledge of production and marketing, which can affect the work they provide.
