The day before its arrival on Mars, the US Space Agency (NASA) released new photos of its “Perseverance” spacecraft, in which the mobile robot appeared suspended two meters above the surface of the red planet. just before landing on it, according to the French News Agency.
The robot was slowly placed on the surface of Mars in the last stage of the operation, i.e. in the last twenty meters, as it was suspended by three wires suspended from the landing craft equipped with eight retarder missiles that slowed the descent. The photo was taken from the bottom of the landing craft and shows the top of the mobile robot, its six wheels and below the surface of Mars.
Explaining the footage at a press conference, “Perseverance” chief engineer Adam Stelzner said it showed “the dust raised by the engines.” Another photo of the landing process was presented just before this step, taken by the MRO probe, which is located in orbit of Mars. When zoomed in, it can see the mobile robot protected by a capsule entering the atmosphere, and its speed has been slowed by the bulge of a huge hypersonic umbrella. In a third image, the first in color, sent by “Perseverance” from the red planet, the shadow of the chariot appears on the surface of Mars, where some rocks are spread out, and in the far horizon of the image the terrain more like the shadow of a cliff.
As for the fourth image, which is also in color, it shows the tip of one of the six wheels of the vehicle, and the surface of the red planet, and it appeared closer to yellow, knowing that the color has yet to be slightly corrected. Rocks 3.8 to 3.7 billion years old have been observed on the surface, which NASA is showing great interest in.
“One of the questions we’ll ask ourselves first is whether these rocks are of volcanic or sedimentary origin,” said co-scientist Katie Stack Morgan. “The vehicle may have landed on a lava flow!”
On Thursday, two photos were taken of the front and rear of the robot, but in poor quality black and white. NASA has not yet been able to confirm whether the Martian voice could be recorded for the first time with microphones. Adam Stelzner explained that the confirmation will come “at the end of this week or the beginning of next week”.
