A wave of anger has swept through social media in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia after Sheikh Nasser al-Din al-Albani’s name was included in a report by Saudi channel Al-Ekhbariya speaking of “terrorist groups”.
The report stated that “Nasir al-Din al-Albani is the founder of the Ahl al-Hadith group, from which other groups have emerged, notably the Al-Hasbah Salafi group, whose members have helped to encroach on the tasks of the State and the execution of the work of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice.
The report also spoke of the group “Juhayman” or “Salafist Group”, whose affiliates “prefer to be called Ahl al-Hadith, which started with an idea of advocacy and ended with the occupation of the Grand Mosque” , according to the report. .

After the report aired, pioneers of social networking sites in Saudi Arabia called # Al-Akhbariya_Tse_by_Al-Albani_and # Al-Albani_Sheikh_Al-Hadith_and-Sunnah, which were among the most popular hashtags in the Kingdom and Algeria, and users expressed their anger and demanded that Saudi authorities hold the channel accountable.
For his part, Saudi Prince Sattam bin Khalid Al Saud reposted the report on his official Twitter account and commented: “The name of Sheikh Muhammad Al-Albani, God have mercy on him, has been included in a report speaking of terrorist groups, broadcast by the Al-Ekhbariya channel, to say the least that it is a failure and ignorance on the part of those who prepared this paragraph ”.
He added: “Anyone who knows the biography of the Sheikh and his warning against blasphemy and terrorism knows that the author of this paragraph is supposed to learn and be educated or talk about the culinary arts, it is better for him.
Some considered that what was broadcast on the Al-Ekhbariya channel was “targeting religion”.
Many spoke of the characteristics of Sheikh Al-Albani, stressing that he was “one of the most savvy academics against partisanship and groups and responding to takfiris,” as they put it.
