About 6 million cases of malaria have been reported in Burundi this year, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Tuesday.
The WHO report indicates that the "epidemic threshold" was "reached or exceeded" last May.
Health Minister Thadi Ndikumana, however, denied the existence of an epidemic in the country.
"In 2017, we reported a malaria epidemic after reporting 4.9 million cases in six months and the deaths of 4,500 people," he told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.
He pointed out that between January and June of last year, 1,400 deaths had been recorded and attributed the decrease in the number of deaths to government efforts, such as the provision of pesticide-treated mosquito nets.
