British experts have been able to develop a test that will change many concepts to predict the risk of breast cancer in women, according to a report released by the BBC.
The new study combines information on family history and hundreds of genes with other factors, such as weight, to give a more complete assessment, according to the UK Cancer Research Center.
Researchers report that women at high risk of infection may receive preventive treatment and other tests that may help them prevent the disease.
About 55,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, according to the report.
"This is the first time that many elements have come together to predict breast cancer," said Professor António Antonio, head of the research team at Cambridge University. "This test can change the rules of the game of breast cancer screening, because we can now identify a large number of women at different risk levels, not just high-risk women," he said.
Antonio pointed out that the new examination "should help doctors to assign appropriate care to women, depending on the level of risk to which they are exposed".
