According to an Australian study, the more people understand the benefits of exercise, the more physically active they will be.
Researchers at the University of Central Queensland surveyed 615 people about how well they knew about the benefits of physical activity and laziness. The survey also included questions to measure how long they were walking, to do a small activity like swimming or more, such as cycling.
"Regular physical activity" reduces the risk of death by 30% for whatever reason, by 35% the risk of serious chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes mellitus, says lead researcher Stephanie Squibb and her colleagues at the newspaper More One. They also wrote: "Regular physical activity also increases average age, improves fitness and overall health, and almost all respondents agreed that physical activity was beneficial to health.
But participants were able to link 14 diseases and a decrease in physical activity, out of a total of 22 diseases that humans may feel when they do not do much exercise.
Most of the study participants were unable to estimate the increased risk of illness due to lack of exercise. More than half of the participants were unable to see how good the sport was for the body. However, the researchers found that the more participants were able to properly link certain illnesses and a decrease in physical activity, the more active they were and exercised.
In their study, the researchers stated that health promotion initiatives should aim to raise awareness of the types of diseases associated with non-exercise. However, one of the weaknesses of the study is that about three quarters of the participants are women. It is therefore unclear whether the results also apply to men.
