Experts warned against the presence of a chemical called BPA in paper containers, a thermal paper, which would interfere with the work of the body's hormones if it was released, and its effects to control the secretion, production and functioning of hormones in the body.
The study conducted by international researchers led by the University of Granada, after analyzing 112 receipts and thermal paper tickets in Brazil, Spain and France, showed that BPA can cause hormone-dependent cancers, associated with infertility, autism, type 2 diabetes, premature births and the onset of puberty.
The writing on the receipts usually disappears after a while. BPA is therefore added to receipts to darken the writing without ink, as well as in other materials such as plastic water bottles and shopping bags.
According to Professor Nicholas Olia of the University of Granada, Spain, we can recognize this type of paper because it becomes immediately black if we place it near a source of heat.
He urged that receipts not be kept in wallets, pockets or cars.
