Netanyahu says rapprochement with Sudan will bring benefits to Israelis crossing the Atlantic
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that “the three normalization agreements with Arab countries have ended Israel’s geographical isolation by offering shorter and cheaper flights.”
“We are changing the map of the Middle East,” Netanyahu added at a press conference, showing a whiteboard with charts of flight paths.
He said traveling over Saudi, Bahraini and Emirati airspace would save travelers to India and other Asian destinations “hours and a lot of money, of course.”
Israel reached agreements last month with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, and on Friday agreed with Sudan to normalize relations, negotiated by the United States.
“There will be more countries,” Netanyahu said.
Saudi Arabia still does not have official relations with Israel, but it now allows flights in its airspace.
The Palestinian Authority has condemned the normalization of Arab states with Israel, calling it “treason”.
‘A visit to Sudan’
On the deal with Sudan, Netanyahu made it clear that the rapprochement with Khartoum would offer benefits to Israelis crossing the Atlantic.
“We are now flying west, over Sudan, according to the agreements we made even before announcing normalization, and over Chad, with which we have also established relations, with Brazil and South America, ”he said.
Netanyahu has revealed that an Israeli delegation will visit Sudan in the coming days to complete the deal.
It was not clear how long it would take to complete the deal.
The military and civilian leaders of the Sudanese transitional government are divided over how quickly and to what extent the establishment of relations with Israel should continue.
The Sudanese prime minister wants approval from a parliament that has yet to be formed to move forward with broader formal normalization, and it may not be a quick process.
