Two sources told Reuters that Chinese Huawei has begun talks with Russia to install the Russian operating system "Aurora" on 360,000 smart cards that will be used in the census in Russia next year.
Huawei is looking for alternative operating systems to Google's Android operating system after Washington has ranked the world's second largest maker of smartphones on a list of so-called banned entities that threaten to cut off access key components and technologies in the United States.
"This is a pilot project, we consider that it is the first step in the launch of the Russian operating system on Huawei devices," said the first source to Reuters.
A spokeswoman for Huawei said the company was in talks with the Russian Ministry of Communications, without giving further details.
Last week, the Chinese company said that US trade restrictions could reduce the revenue generated by smartphones by about $ 10 billion this year.
Russia is discussing the possibility of using the Aurora system on 360,000 Huawei smartphones by August of this year.
The second source indicated that Huawei was interested in the project and offered examples of devices that could be used. The Aurora is the only operating system manufactured in Russia and is currently not used.
Huawei is also developing its own operating system in anticipation of the worst-case scenario that Google's basic Android applications would be destitute.
The Russian state telecommunications company Restelecom is the owner of the Aurora system, the only contractor to buy tablets for the Russian census in October, with an estimated population of 147 million inhabitants.
"Different cooperation options with Huawei are being studied with the participation of the Ministry of Communications.We can not reveal the details.There is an agreement on the confidentiality of the negotiations," said Rostelecom in a written response to the request for comments from Reuters.
