(MENAFN-Youm7) The General Secretariat of the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) presented its vision to accelerate the construction of a hydrogen economy in Arab countries, during its participation in a dialogue high level on hydrogen technologies.

Engineer Wael Hamed Abdel Muti, an expert on gas industries within the organization, explained in a working paper entitled “The possible strategy to accelerate the construction of the hydrogen economy in Arab countries” that the The road to building a hydrogen economy in the Arab region is long and arduous. due to the presence of a number of challenges, the most important of which is the high investment costs required to build stations The electrolysis of water to produce green hydrogen, which currently amounts to $ 1,000 per kilowatt, and the sector is still in its infancy a stage that requires preparation for enactment of numerous laws and regulatory procedures that must cover business, functional, safety and security specifications.

In addition, building an international supply chain for hydrogen and its use as a commercial product similar to oil and gas requires expansion, not only in its production, but also in its storage and storage operations. transport, whether by pipelines or by tankers.

In order to overcome these challenges, the OAPEC document presented a three-step strategy that would accelerate the construction of a hydrogen economy in Arab countries. The first phase (2-5 years) is based on the investment in the implementation of pilot projects and experimental projects for the production of green hydrogen on a commercial scale in cooperation with specialized companies, in the field, to understand the basic principles of technology, and build the necessary knowledge base. At this stage, a window for domestic demand can be created by implementing pilot projects to use hydrogen in fuel cells for the transport sector, or by using green hydrogen in chemical industries like ammonia.

As for the second stage (5-15 years), it is an important transitional stage to set up the infrastructure of the hydrogen sector and the policies that regulate it by developing the production of blue hydrogen from available natural gas. while working to develop carbon capture and storage technology to take advantage of existing infrastructure. models.

Finally, the third stage (15 years and over), during which the construction of electrolysis devices is strongly developed after the expected fall in its investment cost, which can reach 500 dollars per kilowatt, and after its commercialization with greater capacities which allow the production of green hydrogen at high rates and then competition to export it to potential demand centers such as the Asian market and the European market.

Engineer Wael Hamed stressed that Arab countries have the ingredients to establish an integrated supply chain for hydrogen, and to gain a significant share of global trade for it in the future, similar to his pioneering experience. in the development of the liquefied natural gas industry, which took five decades and enabled it to gain about a third of the volume of world trade.
