Particles of BM 2.5 are particles suspended in the atmosphere that enter the respiratory tract of humans, cause serious diseases and epidemics that can lead to death.
Researchers from the Fowai Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Emory University in the United States have evaluated the association between prolonged exposure to BM particles 2.5 and diabetics based on information collected from more than 88,000 Chinese adults.
The research team used concentrations of BM 2.5 particles collected by a satellite to assess their particle exposure during the 2004-2015 period.
The overall risk of diabetes increased by 15.7%, with an increase of 10 micrograms per cubic meter of BM 2.5.
The harmful effect of particles becomes more important in young and old, women, non-smokers and people with low body mass index.
"The study will benefit policy design and intervention design for diabetes prevention," said researcher Lu Xiangfeng. "Our future work will focus on the use of spatio-temporal data on BM 2.5 particles with increased accuracy to detect the health effects of exposure to these particles for a long time."
