MADRID (Reuters) – Real Madrid have missed a precious opportunity to get closer to the top of the Primera Liga after a 2-2 fall to Villarreal on Thursday in a match postponed from the 17th stage of the competition.
Real remained fourth with 30 points, seven points behind the Barcelona leader, while Villarreal advanced to 16 points from behind.
Santi Cazorla opened early for Villarreal in the fourth minute, but the hosts' delight was not short-lived after French striker Karim Benzema tied for Real in the seventh minute.
Real took advantage of the confusion in Villarreal after the equalizer, while French Rafael Farran added the second goal to the royal team in the 20th minute.
Cazorla continued their streak after returning to the net, scoring Villarreal's equalizer in the 82nd minute, ending Real's three-game winning streak and canceling his third FIFA Club World Cup win in early 2019.
