An Australian study shows that the more people understand the benefits of exercise, the more physically active they are.

Researchers at the University of Central Queensland surveyed 615 people about how well they knew about the benefits of physical activity and laziness.

Most of the study participants were unable to estimate the increased risk of illness due to lack of exercise. More than half of the participants were unable to see how good the sport was for the body.

The researchers said in their study that health improvement initiatives should aim to raise awareness about the types of diseases associated with non-exercise.

However, one of the weaknesses of the study is that about three-quarters of the participants were women, so it was unclear whether the results also applied to men.

"A large proportion of Australian adults are not active enough," Squibb wrote in an email to Reuters Health. "For these people, we say that all physical activity is better than nothing and that increased physical activity is beneficial for health."
