A woman with a mental disorder

Swedish researchers from the University of Gothenburg have discovered that physical and mental exercises, in the middle ages, significantly reduce the risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease during aging.

According to the EurekAlert website, the scientists' study lasted 44 years and involved 800 Swedish women.

Researchers conducted a questionnaire among study participants about their level of physical and mental activity. The mental activity included reading, writing, participation in concerts, singing, embroidery and horticulture. The researchers assigned scores of 1 to 10 for each response.

The researchers divided the women into two groups in light of the results of the questionnaire. The first group included women who did not receive more than two degrees and the second group, those who obtained between 3 and 10 degrees (56%). Researchers used the same method of physical activity and divided women into two groups equally "active at 82%" and "inactive at 17%".

Of the 102 women with Alzheimer's disease, 41 with mixed dementia and 27 with vascular dementia, 194 women had dementia during the school years. Women with high mental activity showed a 46% reduction in the risk of Alzheimer's disease and 34% reduction in the risk of mental disability.

Physical activity reduced the risk of vascular dementia by 52% and mixed dementia by 56%.
